Lamp holders, also known as light sockets, are fixtures used in lighting installations. They hold a bulb whilst also providing an electrical connection to it. It is essentially a connection between the wire and the bulb. Some lamp holders also provide support for a pendant or lampshade.
Lamp holders are also designed for specific light bulb types, for example, LED, GLS or CFL. It is essential that you choose a lamp holder that is compatible with your bulb, and vice versa to ensure a safe installation.
Lamp holders are generally made from plastic, ceramic or metal. This includes brass, porcelain, PC and PBT. Different materials each have their own benefits however the most common reason for these material options is purely aesthetic or cost-based.
Depending on the bulb and holder type, there are various methods. Most lamp holders fall under either screw-in, snap-fit or push-fit. Some lamp holders are also fitted with a switch to control the power to the bulb directly, rather than a remote switch that needs to be wired externally to the unit.
