    What is a multimeter?

    The multimeters purpose is to check the electrical resistance within a circuit. They are available in two different types; analogue or digital. Within the device there are many tests that can be performed, no two multi-meters are the same and the functions can vary with the price so it's important to have a good quality multimeter with multiple functions if you are an electronic engineer and electrician.

    What are the main types of multimeters

    • Analogue Multimeters - relatively simple to use, but have limited features and functions
    • Digital Multimeters (DMMs) - come in various forms including handheld, benchtop, and clamp meter versions, each catering to specific measurement requirements.
    • Bench multimeters - more suitable for the workshop and laboratory-based engineers and technicians who need a reliable instrument for maintenance, test, or repair tasks

    What is the difference between an analogue and digital multimeter?

    Analogue multimeters use a needle scale to show their readings whereas digital multimeters have a numeric display. As the needle can move over time due to fluctuations caused by the flow of the electricity, the needle will move over time. As technology has advanced, digital multimeters (DMM) have become more popular as they have the ability to measure with greater accuracy and the LCD display is easy to read.

    Checks performed by multimeters include:

    • AC or DC voltages
    • Resistance
    • Continuity of electrical components
    • Current in circuits
    • Diode testing
    • Some advance models may measure frequency, temperature, capacitance and have True RMS voltage and current readings
